Empowering Teachers Through Financial Literacy and Capability-Building
To mark National Teachers’ Month, the Department of Education (DepEd) and China Bank Savings (CBS) have joined forces once more to launch a nationwide series of Financial Wellness Workshops. The initiative is dedicated to strengthening financial literacy and capability among public school teachers.
Niel Jumawan, First Vice President and Head of CBS’s Automatic Payroll Deduction (APD) Lending Group, explained that the “Financial Wellness Roadshow for Teachers” is designed to enhance educators’ grasp of personal finance essentials, particularly in savings, budgeting, debt management, and the use of tools such as Statements of Assets and Liabilities and Cash Flow Statements.
Our overarching goal is to contribute meaningfully to nation-building by supporting teachers in achieving improved financial wellness, fostering a culture of savings, and strengthening creditworthiness within the education sector” – Jumawan said.
He noted that this year’s roadshow, which covers key areas in Mindanao and the Visayas, reinforces CBS’s long-standing advocacy for responsible financial practices at the grassroots level.
By capacitating teachers, we hope to create a ripple effect that reaches their learners, families, and communities—ultimately helping scam-proof vulnerable sectors of society,” he added.
Proven Impact
Between 2023 and 2024, CBS successfully conducted 40 financial wellness seminars across the country, benefitting 2,081 participants, including teachers, students, and CBS employees.
This year’s schedule includes:
- September 5 – Glan, Sarangani
- September 7 – DepEd Regional NTM Kick-Off, Koronadal City
- September 19 – Dumaguete City
- September 21 – DepEd Regional NTM Celebration, Dumaguete
- September 24 – Iloilo City
These sessions are expected to draw hundreds of participants and highlight CBS’s commitment to teacher empowerment.
Wider Commitment to Financial Inclusion
Beyond teachers, CBS also provides strong support for SMEs and retail banking clients. With 277 touchpoints nationwide—including 170 full-service branches and 107 Lending Centers/Branch-Lite Units (BLUs)—and a 261-unit ATM network (the second largest among thrift banks), CBS continues to expand access to financial services nationwide.
